Dr. Tricia Hudson-Matthew is an Assistant Professor and Department Chair of the Human Services Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She has a bachelor’s degree in Human Services with a concentration in High Risk Youth from MSU Denver, a master’s degree in Community Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Northern Colorado and a Doctorate in Counseling Education and Supervision from Argosy University. She is a certified play therapist and her current clinical work in private practice focuses on children aged five years+. She also works with substance abuse individuals and couples, assisting them in their relational journey. Her scholarly interests include ethics between therapist and clients, mental health and addictions. Dr. Hudson-Matthew is thrilled to be “living my life’s dream by assisting others in the process of transforming their lives.” She joined MSU Denver in 2010 and loves to help students in their transformation process, as they pursue their life dreams. You’ll find her passionately teaching courses in the core requirements, concentrations and electives in the Human Service curriculum.
Dr. King serves as the Program Director and Assistant Program within the BHAM Program. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado and Arizona and Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) in Colorado. She has served in a variety of clinical roles in diverse settings within the mental health and addictions field, including inpatient, residential, and outpatient settings. While serving as faculty within the BHAM program, Dr. King continues to serve clients in her own private practice and uses an integrative approach of CBT/ DBT.

Dr. Brian Bagwell is a professor in the Human Services and Counseling Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver, following a 20-year career as a firefighter and paramedic. Over the span of his career Dr. Bagwell has provided psychological services to members of the New York Police Department for over a year following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and has presented locally and nationally on topics that include workplace violence; Critical Incident Stress Management; trauma; treating clients, first responders, and pilots with anxiety, panic, and substance use disorders, and perception of threat and de-escalation of violence strategies for first responders, employers, and mental health clinicians. On top of his contribution to the Department of Human Services and Counseling, Dr. Bagwell also coordinates MSU Denver’s Fire and Emergency Response Administration degree program and is a member of the University’s CARE (Consultation, Assessment, Referral and Education) Team.

Patrick Griswold has over 20 years of experience in the behavioral health field as a clinician, administrator and educator. In addition to being a licensed mental health and addiction counselor, he is a RN with a specialty in mental health nursing. Patrick is the former director of North Charles, a Harvard Medical School affiliated substance abuse treatment program in Cambridge MA. He has provided trainings and supervision for Harvard Medical School residents and is currently on faculty at Metropolitan State University of Denver, Human Services and Nursing Departments. He is actively focused on addressing student’s emotional learning and has presented at national and international conferences on affective learning and developing student emotional intelligence.

Dr. Tara Hammar is an Associate Professor in the Human Services and Counseling Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She earned an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from East Carolina University. She completed her doctorate in Human Development from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Hammar is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Colorado and an Approved Supervisor through the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. She teaches a variety of coursework in the Department including Internship, Introduction to Trauma-Informed Care, and Advanced Trauma Counseling Skills.
Dr. Hammar’s career path continues to inform her teaching on the MSU Denver campus; she started her career as a Title One Preschool Teacher in Wilmington, NC, lead a court-mandated Parent Education Program for divorcing parents in Storrs, CT, and directed a day treatment program in Denver for children with a significant trauma history. Her research interests include program evaluation and the trauma history of college students working towards a degree in the helping professions. She is committed to supporting MSU Denver students as they prepare for the challenges of working in the field of Human Services and enjoys mentoring students whose interests include mental health, trauma, and recovery.

Dr. Shawn C. Worthy is a Professor in the Human Services Department at Metropolitan State University. He studied at the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University, where he was awarded a masters and then doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He began his career as an instructor at Northern Illinois before working in many clinical settings for behavioral and therapeutic services.. He joined MSU Denver in 1995, receiving tenure in 2002. He served as Human Services Department Chair in 2005 and Interim Vice President of Student Services in 2006 and has also worked as the Director of Mentoring and Summer Bridge Programs with Student Services. He currently serves at the MSU Denver NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative, as well.
Dr. Worthy has done research and published work extensively about sports psychology on how all levels of skiers cope with fear. He is also involved with work to eliminate domestic violence relating to adolescents. He has researched, published and presented at many conferences and workshops striving to understand diversity as it pertains to engaging people of color. He has also worked as a clinician and psychotherapist at the Children’s Hospital of Denver and The Urban League of Denver.

Angela Furney loves her role as Field Director and Graduate Academic Advisor in the Department of Human Services and Counseling. During her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Family Studies, Angela completed three very different internships. Each internship taught her something important about herself and ultimately led her to a graduate degree in Organizational Management. Angela enjoys using her knowledge of effective organizational and leadership practices to empower students to find their best agency fit while growing in their professional identities. When Angela is not meeting with students or employers, she is likely spending time with her wife, Nicole, and their two young children, Brooklyn and Ellis.

Monique Marie Left Hand Bull is the Advisor for the Department of Human Services and Counseling. She is an indigenous educator & sCHOLAr, a first-generation college student, and an alum of MSU Denver. Monique’s unique perspective on life and culture as an indigenous person who thrives in her culture, aims to make a positive impact on students by using her education and experience at MSU Denver to break down cultural and community barriers while helping students achieve their dreams of obtaining a degree. With over ten years of experience working with youth and young people in underserved communities, her biggest passion is devoting her work towards diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Outside academia, Monique and her family takes part in culturally-based family activities that include Pow Wows (native dancing), Jeffco Indian Ed program, and Danza (Aztec dancing).
